Weekend Recap: Northern VA Fine Arts Festival x Reston Town Center

This weekend I found myself returning to my old high school town for the first time in years. The occasion? A spontaneous invite to check out the Northern VA Fine Arts Festival at Reston Town Center (my friends define me as one of those 'I like art type girls'). The area has really changed since my high school days when there was nothing but a movie theatre, ice skating rink and a few restaurants. The festival boasted hundreds of patrons all coming together to appreciate fine art and expression. The town center's streets were lined with booths where artists from all across the U.S. displayed every type of art form that you could think of. I really enjoyed being surrounded by such creativity and I'm sure it will inspire another work from myself in the coming days. It was a nice change of pace, and I'm looking forward to all of pop-up festivals that this season brings.

Happy Sunday!
xoxo

( SIDE NOTE: My brother went to his first prom this weekend. He's a little man now. *sad face* )

Baby Tonight x Robert Glasper

the wind down

Musings x 5/12/2014

I wish people were who they say they are
we have so much more control over our lives than we realize
nothing more than a 'choose your own ending' book
happy to know you're doing well
think I passed on my blessing years ago
want: cotton candy
living social happy hour cruises
hair growth regimen: pineapple up do's to prevent breakage
Vashtie vibes
change the way you look at things and the things you look at change
flowers in bloom
can't defend fiction.
I like to make people around me feel like they're on a hidden camera show.. lol
I deserve EVERYTHING good that comes my way.
let God bless you
Now playing: Superstar x Lauryn Hill
"come on baby light my fire, everything you drop is so tired"
want: sunflowers
I've dealt with a lot of unappreciative people in my life.. and to some I've probably been that person. But one thing I've learned along the way is we always come to regret the things we didn't appreciate. Whether it be immediate or years down the line.
I get to see Outkast in less than a month.. life complete
TRIBE traveled to a new state this week; Wisconsin!
I don't like being torn..
because that means that the good and the bad are too close to call
I don't need my ego stroked
what is ego anyway?
my friends keep me motivated
It'll never be different as long as you want more of the same
I'd like to catch the carnival the next time it's in town
we have a choice in who we deal with.. stop being a slave to your associations
responsibility
ox blood in the spring
no fried foods!
dreams reveal things we don't even know are lingering because they are so deeply lodged in our subconscious
you don't have to 'relive' your childhood if you make it a point to keep the fun going.. never stop living
my prayers for you went unanswered
GOAL to not relive the same year/ story line again

Should've Went to Art School: Selfie

I've never been good at drawing myself. I think that ego doesn't always allow us to accurately capture our self fully, flaws and all. This time was different though. I tried to channel my inner Frida Kahlo.. a woman who wasn't afraid to let her flaws (by society's standards) all hang out in her portraits: immobility, unibrow, mustache and all. I sat on the couch, mirror in hand, and studied my face; high forehead, bag plagued eyes, prominent nose, unruly hair.. After about an hour I was happy with what I created. A true 'selfie' of my minds eye.

they say you get what you give.. but they don't tell you it could be days, weeks or even years.. you don't get to choose when that good or bad energy comes back around.
stay on your path and continue to be a good person

Generation Envy: Billy Joel x The Longest Time

This song makes me feel good.

I'm so envious of generations before me. People who grew up in a time where love and marriage actually meant something.. and the music reflected that. Men weren't afraid to be vulnerable in showing their feelings toward the woman they loved, and women allowed themselves to be courted.. instead of picking up the slack and actually becoming the "courter." Le sigh. So many gems to be found in the oldies.. the classics.

Cinco De Mayo: Tales Of The Sombrero

Girl talk
Margaritas
Tequila
Jokes on top of jokes on top of jokes
... oh, and a sombrero.

Cinco De Mayo truly was a happy one. Man, I need more nights like this. These girls make my heart smile.

Fight Party Flashback.

This past Saturday was my first time seeing Mayweather fight.. ever. To be honest, I wasn't really impressed.. (shock! awe! ..I know) but to be fair, I heard that he wasn't fighting like himself. I guess it will take the next fight to change my mind.

things that are important to us
things of value
we hold close
and allow them to grow
foundation
free of the cracks of
outside influence,
judgment
and ill wishing

we nurture them
water and tend to
their every need
because we want them to grow
freely and beautifully

reach their full potential

Me this Summer.

( SIDE NOTE: Been studying Frida Kahlo… )

Musings x 4/30/2014

I've never truly put myself first.

Social media is losing it's appeal to me
it's always the people that you least expect that support you the most
Just fell in love with Shameless Maya
so many books have been recommended to me lately.. excited to dive in

My biggest regrets usually involve believing in people
"naturally and genuinely curious"
trying not to fall into routines
God's love is manifold
undeniable
CHANGE
having something to look forward to
you have to sacrifice in order to gain
stop talking.
being around positive people
feline
no expectations,
the universe will bless you.. your good deeds won't go unnoticed
starting to get into travel shows.. nice reminder of how big the world is
too many live their lives in fear and don't even know it
play with color
Don't take me for granted
phenomenal woman

TBT x (Self) Length Envy

Jan 2012.
(I look so young here.)
I was scrolling through old pictures on my macbook today and these pictures caught my eye. I'm so anxious to get my length back.. I still have a long way to go, but I'm getting there. Since I started wearing my hair natural ninety-percent of the time, along with lightening it to a blonder shade, I am very cognizant of the products that I use. When I was straightening it constantly products weren't even a passing thought. I've had to throw out so many that contain alcohol and other harsh ingredients because of the damaging effects that they were unknowingly causing, and because of this I feel that my hair is actually healthier.

( SIDE NOTE: When my hair was this length I never really embraced my curls so I'm excited to see how the length and my 'fro will play out as well. )

The Flirtation with Vulnerability

The flirtation with vulnerability
the wanton need to
delve deeper into self
and feel something...
starts with a conscious decision to allow oneself to go there
knowing that the outcome of such action
could prove
beneficial or detrimental
but also embracing that the lingering space in between
is filled with the beauty of adrenaline and hope
terror and anticipation,
falling or flying?
into the deep abyss or a field of daisies
defenses disabled,
you're out there
possibilities unknown
but the desire to find out
overcomes the fear
knowing that there's no other way to get to this place
than to jump
