#Moechella Brings The City Out!

screen grab from twitter
hella proud of dc for coming together
against the gentrifiers trying to get rid of everything
that makes the city what it is

... and what it has been for decades.

long before the coffee shops and overpriced (empty) luxury apartments

gogo isn't going anywhere

the heartbeat of the city

Inspire the TRIBE takes Artechouse DC

"unfortunately, no one can be told what the matrix is. you have to see it for yourself."
-Morpheus

Yesterday I was finally able to check out Artechouse, a new interactive exhibit to DC. I say "finally" (it was less than a week after the grand opening) because I had spent hours scouring through the tagged photos from the exhibit's instagram (@Artechouse) with each picture being better than the last. Excited is an understatement! And I must say... it didn't disappoint.

The tickets allow you access to the exhibit for an hour, although we were allowed in a little early, so we were able to make greater use of our time. There were just the right amount of people - not overly crowded, pretty chill group and no real photo bombs (*praise hands*).

Now that I know what to expect, I'm going to check out the exhibit again soon and see if there's anything that I missed.

Art makes the world go 'round.

Lust List: Archie's Press Maps

Put on for your city(ies)

I'm a first generation Washingtonian. My family hails from New Orleans, LA. this year I plan to take steps toward exploring the culture more, and finding out as much as I can about those who came before me. I also want to trace my ancestry before the end of Black History Month (although I've been told the results can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks). I feel like you can't truly know yourself until you know where you come from.. and I want to know more than just the surface. Where did we come from? What stories do my grandparents have to share from their childhoods? How did we find our way to DC? What did their parents do for a living, and their parents before them? Hopefully one day I'll be able to add an African country/ territory (or 3)  to this list.

( SIDE NOTE: Ash Wednesday calls for us to give up something, and this year instead of giving up food (chocolate, red meat) or something to do with vanity (40 Days of Curls) as I've done in previous years, I'll be giving up something that will instead help my peace of mind. )

P.S. Pay attention to who supports you.. like really supports you, not just who talks about it. It's never the people that you'd expect.. a complete stranger will support you before those you're closest to.

Weekend Recap: Last Days of Summer 2014

I love entertaining. It's probably one of my favorite things to do. Out of town visitors allow more freedom to do that than my 'local' friends because they're a lot more willing to explore an area that's new to them. I've lived in DC my whole life and there are so many untapped sources of fun that I don't take advantage of nearly enough.. but I'm getting better.

This weekend was unplanned for the most part. A friend told me about a "Beer Bourbon and BBQ" event that was being held in the Tyson's corner area which was entirely too convenient to pass up. The event was cool - unlimited beer, whiskey and wine tasting... along with various vendors serving up everything from a whole roasted hog to spreadable bacon. (I'm a non-pork eater so I was there solely for the drink and good time.) Sunday, the last official day of summer, was a chill one. Caught the Redskins game on an outdoor screen at the harbor - which we stumbled upon accidentally, and followed up with a bottle of wine at the Tasting Room.

Good times all around. Can't wait to see what fun the fall has to bring.

( SIDE NOTE: Discovered this song [Do I Wanna Know x Arctic Monkeys] this weekend. I'm late to the party, but it's perfection. )

One Mic: Hip Hop Culture Worldwide

March 25- April 14

I will, however, make my way out for One Mic: Hip Hop Culture Worldwide presents:

Thai's Orchid Kitchen
2314 Pennsylvania Ave, SE DC
4pm

and

HR-57 Center for the Preservation of Jazz Blues, NE DC
7pm

Both events are free to the public and take place on Sunday March 30th.

( SIDE NOTE: Are your wants making you fall short of attaining your needs? )

Split This Rock Poetry Festival

I've never heard of this event, but it looks pretty cool.
 $120 for a four-day pass/ $50 per day
A little steep for my budget right now, (I'll stick with $5 open mics at Busboys and Poets) but I'll be sure to scour YouTube for what I'm sure will be great footage from this next week. ;)

Recap: The Freedom Party 90's Jam

Recap
The Freedom Party 90's Jam @ The Howard Theatre

Prince said it best, "tonight we're gonna party like it's 1999..." and party we did!
The party lasted well into the night, with attendees not thinking twice about the hour of sleep lost. There were guest appearances by Britney Spears, Kris Kross and Missy Elliot.... 's dopplegangers; and a cash prize for best nineties outfit. The turn out was greater than expected. A mix up of party goers from all walks of life came together under one roof to celebrate the epicness that was the nineties era. It felt good to take it back and get a dose of what it would actually be like to be of club age in that era. The music was good, the clothes were baggy and the vibe was ill. I overheard talks that The Freedom Party may become a monthly "thing" here in DC, as it is in New York and Chicago. I'd definitely be all over that.
This was my only pic from the night; a selfie en route to the party. Unfortunately, it barely shows my nineties outfit attempt: baby tee, plaid pants, cowrie shell choker and this jean jacket tied around my waist. The spice girl platforms and brown lipstick brought the fun.

I don't know why it took me so long to start venturing out into the local art scene that DC has to offer. It seems like we always feel like other cities have so much more to offer without even giving our hometown a chance. On Tuesday I checked out a new open mic spot, The Dunes DC, which is basically a tricked out art gallery. The feature poet was Angel Nafis, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who was absolutely brilliant. I didn't get to record because I have completely run out of storage on my phone.. so I will link back to some of her work in a later post. I also had the pleasure to meet Pages, an extremly taleneted poet (pictured photobombing in the second to last photo), who swore that the next time he saw me he'd be sure to make me read one of my pieces lol. I guess I'll have to stay ready.

The Dunes DC hosts a poetry slam every Tuesday at 8pm.

( SIDE NOTE: I also noticed that I'm starting to recognize a lot of the same faces from poetry slams that I've been to prior. Does that mean I'm turning into a regular? )

Blind Rhino @ Art Whino

Blind Rhino @ Art Whino.
I'm obsessed with this venue. Imagine walking into this rainbow colored "house" and finding art everywhere you look from the ceiling to the floor. Now add a DJ, vendors and a stage between two giant lion heads - fun! I will be back, no question.
