Flashback Friday: Halloween 2013 x Cat Eye, Cat Ears

Not sure where I'll end up tonight, it's highly likely I'll be in my bed having a scary movie marathon with my dog... In case I don't partake in this years festivities, here's a throwback.

Cat eye x Cat ears

Happy Halloween all!

( SIDE NOTE: Dear White People was everything I thought it would be. Go see it before it leaves theaters next week! )

Inspire the TRIBE started as an outlet for me.

It served as a place where I could post my innermost thoughts, poetry and dope things that inspired me, and if someone else happened to stumble upon it, (It was completely private for the first two years. Only two of my friends even knew it existed) that was cool too. Since going public it has become so much more. ITT still serves as an outlet for me.. a place to turn when I want to be creative and share my findings/ creations with the world, but it has become more than that. This year I created a new branch of the site in the form of a tee/ sweatshirt line, We the TRIBE, and watched the movement spread across the country and internationally! Major. (We the TRIBE = the free-thinkers, doers, movers and shakers. )

I'd like to thank all of you who continue to check back seeking inspiration and continue to support. I have a lot planned for the new year. More posts, more content.

"Thoughts on an Airplane Napkin"

So fucking noisy
The chatty 20-something's surrounding on this plane
Chatter on and on about their happy go lucky lives
Phil can't wait to surprise his girlfriend in Atlanta
And Kat just got promoted at her job...
The plane bounces along
Engine roars outside my window
Sun beams in my eyes
But no sound louder than the thoughts clouding my mind

I hate feeling anxious.

Only certain people have this affect on me
Or should I say person
The plane makes its bouncy descent down the runway
We're up next
And next for me is reuniting with you
The same you who still has the ability to make me feel
after all this time,
... against my will.
Because my will isn't free with you
It's been nine months since I've touched your skin
And as I sit here writing this
I can't help but wonder will it feel the same?
What will I say,
What will you say?
Our conversations have been few and far between as of late
I'm to blame.
It seemed easier to run from you then to be sucked back into your web
But here I am.
On this plane.
Waiting.
Walking a thin line,
knowing there's a chance I can get tangled up again
Waiting.
to travel clear across the country
In search of a break from the reality that's overwhelmed me
Because that's all it'll be
Distraction...
Or will it?
A taste of a fantasy
long shot down
a coma
But it's still breathing..

Lift off.

Circle of Influence (things you can affect directly) vs. Circle of Concern (things you care about)

This was one of my favorite takeaways from the course ( 7 Habits of Highly Effective People ). To put it simply it's the concept of reframing your thinking to focus on the things that you can influence/ control, thereby expanding experience, knowledge and building trustworthiness in yourself. This causes the Circle of Influence to grow.

Some examples would be: your happiness, your choices, the people you allow in your space, how you respond to the way people treat you, the time you choose to leave your house when there is a deadline/ your route taken.

When people use their time and energy to focus on the Circle of Concern, or areas in life that are ultimately uncontrollable their circle of influence shrinks.

Some examples would be: a delayed flight, how others treat you, your upbringing, traffic, job security and other peoples weaknesses.

It can also be described as Proactive vs. Reactive focus.

A few shots from the LLULO trunk show held at Nubian Hueman in DC.
1. The collection ( After much deliberation I went with the gray sweatshirt on the mannequin. )
2. Ms. LLULO herself, and I.
3. & 4. The collection from another angle, the classic crop ( this will probably be the next to come home with me. )
5. I was obsessed with this pillow. Will probably return for it too.
6. Another must have come spring.

Creative Release and A Classic Scary Movie Marathon

Needed to release some creative energy today so I took a trip to Michael's on my lunch break and picked up a new sketch book and colored pencils. I drew inspiration from my dads favorite singer, Sade, and in under two hours came up with this piece. I plan to get it framed and give it to him as a gift. I posted the above video to my instagram, @Shari_Renee, to show the many stages of the process.

( SIDE NOTE: Tonight I'm hosting a classic scary movie night at my place. Should be good. )

Six Mistakes I've Made This Year and Lessons I've Learned From Them

Inspired by Rob Hill Sr

  1. I became a puppet. I depended on others to define my emotions and provide my happiness.. so I cut the strings, and took time to myself to rediscover what I wanted and what I loved. In turn I have a better handle over bringing myself personal joy instead of relying on another and it feels great!
  2. I learned that it's not all about me. Once you realize that everyone that you come into contact with on a daily basis has their own story.. their own demons that they're dealing with.. their own reasons for being the way they are.. you'll learn to take things less personal. Once you learn to take things less personal you'll notice a lot less things getting to you.
  3. I tried to replace old feelings with new ones aka rebound... Big mistake! I learned that you have to allow yourself to feel everything, good and bad, and in time you'll be ready to get back in the ring again, but not before you face your feelings and work on yourself.
  4. I gave blood, sweat and tears to a cause I didn't believe in. Learning to refocus my free time to causes I believe in. You can't be a slave to your 'day job.'
  5. I ASSUMED PEOPLE CARED MORE THAN THEY DID. Whoo, did he say a mouthful with this one! (stolen from Rob Hill Sr's instagram post) Actions speak louder than words, and unfortunately genuine people are very hard to find these days. If you give them time, people will show you who they truly are. This goes into the next one, and probably the most important..
  6. Take your time! I tried to rush certain aspects of my life and it only ended up complicating things in the long run. I learned to take the time to learn people, to learn what it is that you truly want out of life, and returned to the "everything in due time" mindset. Trying to force things to fit as you think they should based on your age, or ideals that you'd want for your life in this very moment is the quickest way to drive yourself crazy. What is meant to be will be. Try to hold on to that.

When Life Gets to Be Too Much, Get on A Plane And Go

Recap of my last minute escape to Cali.
When life gets to be too much, get on a plane and go!
I'm so glad that I did. Reunited with my sisters, enjoyed the change of scenery/ atmosphere and came back with a much better outlook.

Kelela x Cut 4 Me

I've been a fan of Kelela ever since she opened up for Solange at the Black Cat a few months ago. This is one of my favorites from her new mixtape, Cut 4 Me.

Blind Rhino @ Art Whino

Blind Rhino @ Art Whino.
I'm obsessed with this venue. Imagine walking into this rainbow colored "house" and finding art everywhere you look from the ceiling to the floor. Now add a DJ, vendors and a stage between two giant lion heads - fun! I will be back, no question.
