Q&A: What Products Do I Use in My Natural Hair Routine?

I'm asked this question fairly often, and over the years the answer has changed. My hair isn't crazy about coconut oil (does nothing for me) or shea butter (eh.), but here are a few products that work wonders for me:

A few steps that I've added to my routine
that have helped retain length and minimize damage:

* taking daily (or when I can remember) biotin supplements
* adding more cucumber to my diet (a tip I learned from one of my vegan friends, superveganpowers.com  )
* doing twist/ braid outs vs. a pineapple at night (helps to decrease tangling and stretch my hair... combating shrinkage)
* investing in products with quality ingredients
* dry hair with an ole t-shirt

and last but not least, one of these bad boys! makes comb outs sooo much smoother.

hope this helps, and I will update this post as I discover new products. :)

Natural Hairstyles: The Pineapple

I mentioned in my musings a few days ago that I've been wearing my hair up to prevent breakage/ split ends. This has been my go-to hairstyle as of late: the pineapple, pulling your hair into a loose ponytail directly atop your head, giving you a style that resembles the fruit.. hence the name. The idea behind this is to achieve perfect "second day curls" by only disturbing the underneath back of your hair and protecting the length as you sleep. I choose to wear mine day and night as not to snag my hair on my clothes which is another contributor to split ends. It's made my natural hair journey that much easier.

Blind Rhino @ Art Whino

Blind Rhino @ Art Whino.
I'm obsessed with this venue. Imagine walking into this rainbow colored "house" and finding art everywhere you look from the ceiling to the floor. Now add a DJ, vendors and a stage between two giant lion heads - fun! I will be back, no question.

too many pictures to post
this was the most fun I've ever had in Miami
currently, having a "real life" intermission until I fly back out next week for the fourth

So I ventured to DC the other day to try out a new restaurant with a friend, and I must say I'm SO glad I did. The destination of choice was Cuba Libre restaurant and Rum bar. From the food to the decor... the whole evening was a welcome change from the usual. After way too much time skimming the menu the waitress suggested the 'Churrasco a la Cubana', and anyone who goes there I highly recommend it! Best food I've had in years. And don't even get me started on their happy hour. A great night was had by all, and I will definitely be adding this one to my 'going out' list.

Day 36 x 40(ish) Days of Curls

Day 36.

Length check!

And so, the no heat (40(ish) Days of Curls) challenge goes on. My curls are a lot more defined than they've ever been. They have also stretched out and hang a lot longer than before, which I love.

I know I will need a trim after all of this, but I'm hoping to achieve this same length post-trim.

( SIDENOTE: My hairdresser is using me as a hair model for her new website, so I may have to cut my curly hair journey short by a few days. :( But no worries, the curls will be back as soon as the shoot is through! )
