Needed to release some creative energy today so I took a trip to Michael's on my lunch break and picked up a new sketch book and colored pencils. I drew inspiration from my dads favorite singer, Sade, and in under two hours came up with this piece. I plan to get it framed and give it to him as a gift. I posted the above video to my instagram, @Shari_Renee, to show the many stages of the process.

I ignored that text a few weeks ago,
it was the right thing to do to protect my soul.
It's crazy, the way you touched me you'll never know,
still hear your words in my head that encourage me to grow.
I was so closed off, and all you wanted to do was open me,
put me on to new things, show me things in me that I couldn't see.
I see things a lot clearer now, but I still can't let you in,
things are so different now
between us
well, the us that used to be
or almost was
never fully manifested because I looked you over
now it's over
ps. you were the only one my mother really approved of

Six Mistakes I've Made This Year and Lessons I've Learned From Them
Inspired by Rob Hill Sr
- I became a puppet. I depended on others to define my emotions and provide my happiness.. so I cut the strings, and took time to myself to rediscover what I wanted and what I loved. In turn I have a better handle over bringing myself personal joy instead of relying on another and it feels great!
- I learned that it's not all about me. Once you realize that everyone that you come into contact with on a daily basis has their own story.. their own demons that they're dealing with.. their own reasons for being the way they are.. you'll learn to take things less personal. Once you learn to take things less personal you'll notice a lot less things getting to you.
- I tried to replace old feelings with new ones aka rebound... Big mistake! I learned that you have to allow yourself to feel everything, good and bad, and in time you'll be ready to get back in the ring again, but not before you face your feelings and work on yourself.
- I gave blood, sweat and tears to a cause I didn't believe in. Learning to refocus my free time to causes I believe in. You can't be a slave to your 'day job.'
- I ASSUMED PEOPLE CARED MORE THAN THEY DID. Whoo, did he say a mouthful with this one! (stolen from Rob Hill Sr's instagram post) Actions speak louder than words, and unfortunately genuine people are very hard to find these days. If you give them time, people will show you who they truly are. This goes into the next one, and probably the most important..
- Take your time! I tried to rush certain aspects of my life and it only ended up complicating things in the long run. I learned to take the time to learn people, to learn what it is that you truly want out of life, and returned to the "everything in due time" mindset. Trying to force things to fit as you think they should based on your age, or ideals that you'd want for your life in this very moment is the quickest way to drive yourself crazy. What is meant to be will be. Try to hold on to that.

Close Your Eyes and Picture Yourself in A Year..
Close your eyes and picture yourself in a year.
Where are you?
What are you doing?
Who's with you?
Write it down.
Now, how do we get you there?
Write it down.
Date it.
Look at what you have written.
When do we start working toward it?
That answer is Now.
Go.

I Dreamt About Snakes Again Last Night..
I dreamt about snakes again last night...
This isn't the first time. (I did a post at the beginning of the year when this was a recurring dream that I was having.)
Dreaming about snakes can mean that you're dealing with unsettling emotions in your every day life. On the bright side, it can also mean that your life is going through a transformational period.
The snake in my dream brought about feelings of fear, (there are different meanings depending on how you are made to feel/ interactions in the dream) which indicates difficulty facing uncertainty in life.
This seems pretty spot on as I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to figure a lot of things out. What do I want to do? How am I going to do it? Where do I want to end up? Who will still be around five years from now?
And so on, and so forth.
( SIDE NOTE: I finally got my forward helix piercing. I can't wait until it heals so I can replace the ring with a cute flower stud. )

When Life Gets to Be Too Much, Get on A Plane And Go
Recap of my last minute escape to Cali.
When life gets to be too much, get on a plane and go!
I'm so glad that I did. Reunited with my sisters, enjoyed the change of scenery/ atmosphere and came back with a much better outlook.
Kelela x Cut 4 Me
I've been a fan of Kelela ever since she opened up for Solange at the Black Cat a few months ago. This is one of my favorites from her new mixtape, Cut 4 Me.

It's Not Always About You
I was having a conversation with a close friend of mine the other day and she said something that really made me think, so I decided to share it with you all. In discussing a series of events, and people coming into and leaving our lives and trying to determine the reasoning for it all, she said:
"I do believe that everyone comes into your life for a reason, and serves some kind of purpose.. even if it's something small. But you also have to realize that maybe you were the "someone" that came into their life to make a change. It's not always about you.."
What a gem! We get so caught up in ourselves sometimes that we don't realize that everyone around us has their own issues and things that they are going through and that maybe sometimes we are the stepping stone/ building block/ glue that they needed to get to where they need to be to become a better version of themselves.
I felt a lot better after taking this perspective on and it definitely changed the way I look at certain relationships in my life.
Happy Sunday!
